Located from a well known fall in Argentina.
No-one knows exactly when it fell but it is thought to be between 4,000 and 6,000 years ago.
The first record of Campo was in 1576. A Spanish governor learned of the iron from the Indians who reportedly believed that it had fallen from heaven. The location of the find was the Campo del Cielo (field of the sky or heaven).
A crater field of at least 26 craters was found in the area covering approx 37 miles. Some of the craters contained many thousands of small iron meteorite fragments. The distribution of the craters suggests that a large meteorite entered Earth atmosphere and broke into pieces as it fell through the atmosphere. The size of the main body is estimated at 4 meters in diameter.
The average composition of the Campo del Cielo meteorites is 6.67% Ni, 0.43% Co, 0.25% P, 87 ppm Ga, 407 ppm Ge, and 3.6 ppm Ir, with the rest being iron
